He started judo at a young age. He distinguished himself with a style that emphasized throwing and focused on submissions, and was selected as a member of the All Japan Junior Training Athletes. After entering Waseda University, he started jujitsu (receiving a black belt from Yuki Nakai) and made his professional debut as a mixed martial artist while still a student.
In the 2000s, he became a top fighter in Japan in DEEP, Shooto, PRIDE, and DREAM, and since 2010 he has expanded his horizons overseas, and currently fights mainly in ONE Championship.
