■Innovative features of this instruction manual 1.What is a split squat?
This is the first instructional work in Japan to explain split squats and north-south guard passes, which are currently trending in the global grappling scene.
Many people may not be familiar with the term "split squat." Literally, it refers to a squat with both feet open front to back and diagonally, and in grappling, it refers to a position in the middle of a knee cut (knee slice) or when the hips are held down by a knee shield on the bottom side.
In grappling, the gravitational force of the gi does not work, so this position is more likely to occur than in jiu-jitsu. There are still very few instructional works on guard passing from this position in the world, and in regular grappling classes it is only taught as part of knee cuts and shin cuts.
■ Development from split squats
Although it was a common position, it did not have a name until now, but it has been redefined as a position recently, and research is progressing on the offense and defense from here. This game teaches you how to grasp the split squat, and also the techniques to break out of a stalemate and pass guard, take the back, and front choke.
■ Consider all kinds of attacks and defenses from the opponent's stretched or contracted body positions
When aiming for a knee cut in Jiu-Jitsu (Gi), you pull up the lower part of your opponent (usually the right hand) when they turn to the side, flattening your body and removing any obstacles in your direction of movement. In grappling, you can't pull up, so you need to handle your frame with more precision. This is a common technique in Jiu-Jitsu (Gi), so please try it out.
You will be amazed at how to use your knees and arms to control the frame, how to deal with butterfly hooks, and why you should not put your arm deep under your opponent's arm. You can also aim for a combination with the body lock pass and the north-south pass, which will be explained in the second half.

■②North South Pass
When passing the guard, the bottom player may become round, resulting in a north-south position. This often happens accidentally, but here we will explain how to strategically aim for a pass guard from the north-south position, starting from the entry. Adjusting the distance will depend on the length and flexibility of the opponent's limbs, so please try it out while hitting with a partner.
In the north-south position, the opponent can frame his legs, so even if the opponent's upper body is close, it is often difficult to pass the ball. The reason for this is the way of turning and the position of the head, and we were given a detailed explanation on how to prevent and release the frame.
■ Stacking after turning around
Even if you advance to the north-south position, your opponent may point their foot at you and prevent you from passing the guard. Here, you will learn the technique of stacking to pass the guard and take the back.
(※Stack: bending the opponent's body to apply pressure )
There is also an explanation of passing guards that target the "edge" when the opponent returns to the front. While preventing triangle chokes and K guards, you can safely aim for the north-south.
This moves pairs perfectly with the split squat pass in the first half, so be sure to keep teamwork in mind as you learn both sides.
■Comment from Kenta Iwamoto
"The split squat pass you learn in this tutorial allows you to pass while staying on top, and is easy to enter, so it's versatile. On the other hand, the north-south pass can be used to complement the split squat pass by blocking your opponent's attacks by attacking from a very close distance!
Split squats are done from the front, and north-south squats are done from the outside. By understanding how to use them, you can complement each other like front and back, leading to a strong top game. Please look forward to it.
