What is the "Half Guard Scramble Strategy"?
This work is a sequel to DHC Series Vol. 1 "Fundamentals of Half Guard."
In the previous lesson, we learned the "basic blueprint of half guard," including how to set up, grip, and get up from half guard.
And in this work, what happens after he gets up...
We will focus on the offensive, defensive and scrambling situations that arise from sideways movements.
Understanding the DHC series from a positional perspective
- Front: "Principles of Half Guard"
- Bottom: "Deep Half Front and Back"
- Side: Knee Twist Dogfight (this film)
If you know where you are, you can make the right decisions.
Recommended for:
- Even if I stand up, I'll be crushed
- Even if you turn sideways, you can't sweep and it ends
- Whenever a scramble occurs, we lose because of the flow.
- I'm good at half-skiing, but I'm not good at intermediate or advanced skiing.
In half guard, the pressure is easily balanced between the two fighters, which can lead to the fight being put down again or the match becoming deadlocked.
Also, if there are frequent scrambles and the offense and defense become unpredictable, it may end with the player "somehow being able to sweep/not being able to do it."
What you will learn from this work
- Deployment to the side and back after getting up
- How to use your body to make it difficult for your opponent to put pressure on you
- Positioning, procedures and decisions to win a scramble
- Positioning and coordination to win dogfights
Two thematic positions
[1] What is a knee twist?
From a half guard position, wrap the back of your knee around your opponent's ankle,
An offensive position that allows the player to attack while blocking passes by “twisting” inward.
- It is difficult to put pressure on the opponent
- Can also be used for leg locks
- Control and entry are both possible
Natural link from knee twist
- Roll Sweep ↓
- Wrestle up ↓
- Pass guard or back take
Each one works independently and allows you to move on to the next even if the opponent defends against it.
Because the movements are "connected," you can achieve highly reproducible forms without relying on physical strength.
[2] What is a dogfight?
From the half position, raise your upper body and get on all fours next to your opponent.
This is a key position to branch out into single leg or back takes.
To be the "winner" of a dogfight
However, trying to get behind someone using physical strength won't work.
In this game:
- Behind-the-scenes grip fight: Should I put my hands down?
- How to loosen and remove the bar (wrapped overhook)
- When will you get up?
- What are the moves you make to keep your opponent from standing up?
We will provide explanations focusing on efficiency and accuracy, such as:
"Reading" the scramble and squashing it
He won't let his opponents get away even when the situation develops from a back take/tackle/throw-by/scramble to a stand-up.
- How to deal with rolls when your opponent tries to escape
- Fine-tuning the grip (wrist and lock)
- Understanding the structure to keep your advantage in the stands
Further refinement of the half guard
So far, the DHC series has
We have covered a variety of half guard offense and defense, including "half guard," "single leg half," "deep half," and "reverse half."
The theme of this work is "Scramble Strategy"
It is the key to overcoming the "aftermath" that is common to all of them.
Please use this product as a weapon to strengthen your half guard.
Comments from recommenders
Tomoyuki Hashimoto (IBJJF World No. 3, 4th consecutive All Japan Championship winner)
"Once you reach a certain level, the strength of your offense and defense in this area becomes the key for a half guard user. The tension when facing a half guard user who has the ability to take down an opponent is completely different from that of a half guard user who is weak in this area. Being able to apply the pressure that if your opponent is broken, it's over is a big advantage."
